Pretty Sure You’re in Desperate Need of Some Happy Songs Right About Now, Don’t Even Lie

I think I can confidently speak for EVERYONE when I say that 2020 has sucked…and TBH, that is a massive understatement. With the pandemic still raging on and a mess of an election, anxiety and depression rates are steadily rising every day. Sometimes you just wanna say “f*ck it” and live in blissful oblivion to all that’s going on in the world, but since that isn’t always an option (sorry boo), I have your next best solution: Dancing it out to some upbeat, sure-to-cheer-you-up pop songs.

Thankfully, 2020 has blessed us with a lot of new material in the music space. Not only did we see the return of Justin Bieber (!!!), but we also got newness from BTS, the Jonas Brothers and many, many more. Your ticket to happiness is just a click away, my friend!

1

“Intentions” by Justin Bieber feat. Quavo

Okay, okay…some of the lyrics here are a little cheesy—see: “picture perfect you don’t need no filter”—but it’s always nice to hear a pop star give their fans a confidence boost.

2

“Dynamite” by BTS

If you aren’t helplessly obsessed with BTS yet, let this be the song to convert you. I mean…how could you not adore them when they talk about starting their day with a cup of milk before rockin’ and rollin’??? So cute!

3

“If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” by The 1975

God bless The 1975 for keeping extremely danceable, ’80s alternative music alive. And for keeping things extra current with that very 2020 specific “I see her online all the time” lyric.

4

“Toosie Slide” by Drake

Think about it: Have you ever managed to stay mad when listening to a song that gives you a list of dance instructions to follow? Didn’t think so. Like the greats before it (“Cha-Cha Slide” and “Cupid Shuffle,” duh!), Drake’s “Toosie Slide” got everyone off their asses—aka just what we needed this year.

5

“Supalonely” by BENEE feat. Gus Dappeton

Please ignore how wasteful BENEE is being with a perfectly good bowl of Froot Loops for a sec—this song is like a shot of serotonin straight to the brain. You know, regardless of her basically wallowing in her own self pity!

6

“Ice Cream” by BLACKPINK with Selena Gomez

BLACKPINK in your area…okay, not quite, but they are talking about one of the best cold treats known to man. Shoot, just thinking about ice cream is enough to cheer me up. Actually, I think I’m gonna pop into my local supermarket to get a tub, you want anything?

7

“Marigolds” by Early Eyes

Feel free to disagree, but I feel like some of the best happy songs are the ones that don’t immediately present itself as such. The first 30 seconds of this indie banger totally sets you up to think it’s gonna be a slow burner, but then BAM! Those instrumentals brighten up the mood like magic.

8

“Sweet Melody” by Little Mix

Though the Little Mix girls are talking about a lying, cheating, ain’t shit type of dude, it secures a spot on this list for getting me in the mood to work up a sweet sweat in the gym. A testament to this song’s power!

9

“Animal Crossing” by Shawn Wasabi feat. Sophia Black

Just when you thought your Animal Crossing obsession couldn’t get any worse, this bubblegum pop track is here to keep you in the fandom right where you belong.

10

“Smile” by Katy Perry

“I’m thankful/Scratch that, baby, I’m grateful/Gotta say it’s really been a while/But now I got back that smile” — Katy Perry/me after being a full-time sad girl for 7 months and finally finding something to be happy about again

11

“Wish You Were Sober” by Conan Gray

Best way to beat the pandemic blues? Fantasize you’re the star of your very own coming of age movie, and Conan Gray’s music is the soundtrack. (You’re welcome.)

12

“No Judgement” by Niall Horan

If you’ve been able to spend this difficult year with a significant other by your side and like…not break up, consider yourself one of the lucky ones! As a token of your gratitude, play this hella cute song to show your S.O. that you love them exactly the way they are. Their smile will melt your insides.

13

“Over Yet” by Hayley Williams

Yep, definitely performed this workout routine once during the pandemic. (Key word: Once!)

14

“Witches” by Alice Phoebe Lou

Just because this song casually discusses witchcraft doesn’t mean that it can’t bring joy. This one’s for all my spellbinding peeps that wanna feel lighter than air!

15

“It’s Bugsnax!” by Kero Kero Bonito

Bugsnax—a video game about capturing half-bug, half-snack creatures on a mysterious island—isn’t officially out yet, but Kero Kero Bonito is here getting me seriously pumped for the release with this addicting tune.

16

“I Feel Alive” by COIN

“When the lights go out /And your blood is pumping / There’s a power to be found” is something that I absolutely must file away for when I can’t make myself get out of bed and need to get pumped up.

17

“What a Man Gotta Do” by Jonas Brothers

This track never fails to get me grinning from ear to ear. Let’s call it my kryptonite.
