Nostalgic Recollections of Childhood Dining Establishments
Childhood memories are often intertwined with the special moments we spend eating out with our families. Many of these memories revolve around particular restaurants that have since closed, leaving us with a bittersweet feeling of missing them.
One such establishment that stands out is the Compton’s Log Cabin restaurant in my hometown of Maine. My family and I lived within walking distance, although we always drove there. The food was always delicious and reasonably priced. My parents allowed my two sisters and me to choose anything we wanted from the menu. My father’s favorite was the crab imperial, but as time went by, my mother and I frequented the newly-installed salad bar for both of us, followed by an entree. However, the owner faced a significant challenge: some patrons began bringing Tupperware containers to the sandwich bar and taking home their food, which resulted in a shutdown. Eventually, the restaurant closed down, and a Rite Aid pharmacy took its place. I still miss the rustic charm of Compton’s Log Cabin!
Favorite Childhood Restaurants
Among the many restaurants I remember, Chi Chis is the one that took a special place in my heart. Every year, my parents would take me there for my birthday. The restaurant’s unique culture and the cakes with chocolate sauce were a highlight of the day. When Chi Chis closed down, it left me heartbroken, and it remains my favorite dining destination to this day.
Bonanza Steakhouse, too, holds a significant place in my memories. It came to our town when I was growing up, and it had a large salad bar that was included with most meals. As a high school student, Bonanza was a convenient place to go. The food was reasonably priced and tasty, making it a favorite among students and families.
Other St. Louis restaurants that were equally memorable include Noah’s Ark, The Orient, Miss Hullings, Monte Bello pizza, Rinaldi’s, Saleem’s, Caleco’s, Duff’s, Big Boy’s, Wright City, Casa Gallardo at Northwest Plaza, Steak ‘n’ Shake, The Parkmoor, and Cyrano’s. Each one of these restaurants provided a unique dining experience that is now a distant memory.
When these beloved restaurants close, it leaves an empty space in our hearts and memories. But the fond memories and nostalgic feelings remain, reminding us of the simple joys of childhood and the special moments shared over food.
