Times are tough, there’s no doubt about it. More and more people are losing their jobs, poverty is increasing by the day and Saffas are forced to try and make ends meet on their own.

One lady decided to use her talent for baking to make money to support herself and her family. She made the beloved ‘vetkoeke’ to sell on a street for a measly R1 each.

Luckily, there are still good people out there. The Curro Academy Clayville Independent School saw the gogo’s struggle and decided to buy each and every vetkoek she was selling.

They then handed out the fried dough bread to Saffas passing by on their way to work.

Taking to Facebook, the school shared a photo of the hard-working lady and how they helped:

“This lady is selling vetkoek in the morning to somehow survive. At R1 a vetkoek what kind of living is that. Our school bought all her stock to donate to people walking to work. Surely we are going to do better to help our community. Very very sad but challenged to make a difference.”
