Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula has clapped back at the people who were asking if it was necessary for the police to drive Volkswagen Polo cars.
The minister posted a video on Twitter showcasing a new fleet of cars for law enforcement. In the clip, VW Polos are lined up next to each other.
“The use of technology to drive law enforcement has been prioritised. These will be fitted with such and be deployed across the country,” said Mbalula.
He also shared a video that showed off the technology installed in the cars that will help aid in the tracking down of criminals. A number of people were impressed with this initiative from the government but some could not help but raise their eyebrows:
@Zack_here said: “VW Polos? Whose idea was that? You might as well get those officers Uzzi shoes, jeans and t-shirts.”
@KhumbudzoN1 commented: “Did you spend according to the budget allocated?”
@Rampheri said: “Yet government doesnt have money for wages increment which was signed for in 2018. Who is the fool here?”
Mbalula hit back at one of the people who were criticising their initiative and simply said:
“Haibo Zack, how do you suppose we chase criminals: You want us to buy KWID and 12kg yomgqusho for balance and chase criminals with them?”
In other political news, Briefly.co.za previously reported on reasons why Andile Lungisa’s parole has some fuming. Former ANC Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality councillor Andile Lungisa was released on parole earlier this week and it has angered a number of South Africans.
Lungisa was sentenced to three years in jail back in 2018 after he was found guilty of smashing a glass jug on the head of Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Rano Kayser in 2016. He was then subsequently suspended from the ANC.
