Everything We Know About Dont Worry Darling, Olivia Wilde’s Movie Starring Harry Styles

Since you’ve had a couple of months to digest the fact that Harry Styles is no longer your boyfriend, and in reality, he’s actually Olivia Wilde’s boyfriend, are you emotionally strong enough to discuss the movie where it all went down? ‘Cause that’d be the much-anticipated Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller set in a desert town (possibly Palms Springs?) in 1950s California.

Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming movie, including details on the cast (somebody already got fired, yikes), the plot, Olivia Wilde’s directing style, and my personal speculation about the release date. There isn’t an official trailer quite yet, but you can get a sense of the vibes (creepy! sexy! moody! dark!) in this concept vid, enjoy!

I repeat: Olivia Wilde is the director

Though Don’t Worry Darling is only Wilde’s second directing projectshe made her directorial debut in 2019 with the majorly successful and critically acclaimed teen comedy Booksmart—she’s already established herself as a badass force to be reckoned with behind the camera. Famously, she fired Shia LaBeouf from this project, citing her “no assholes policy,” a way of thinking that she expanded upon in Variety‘s Director on Director series:

“Someone, who’s a very established actor and director in this industry, gave me really terrible advice that was helpful, because I just knew I had to do the opposite. They said, “Listen, the way to get respect on a set, you have to have three arguments a day. Three big arguments that reinstate your power, remind everyone who’s in charge, be the predator.” That is the opposite of my process. And I want none of that.”

Luckily for everyone involved in Don’t Worry Darling, Wilde is committed to barring toxic attitudes from set and cultivating a supportive community of creatives. Get this: She apparently swore by group hugs with the Booksmart crew. Aww.

The cast is so! damn! good!

To name just a few A-listers, the cast includes Florence Pugh (who stole our hearts with her Oscar-nominated performance in Little Women), Star Trek‘s Chris Pine, and Crazy Rich AsiansGemma Chan. Don’t Worry Darling probably got put on your radar back in early September 2020, when Deadline reported that Harry Styles nabbed the lead role, replacing Shia LaBeouf. At the time, LaBeouf’s departure was chalked up to scheduling conflicts, but Variety later confirmed that Wilde showed him the door following the news that FKA Twigs, LaBeouf’s ex, had filed a lawsuit against him for “relentless” abuse.

The specific details around everyone’s roles are still a bit foggy, but according to Collider, Pugh plays an “unhappy housewife,” Styles plays her “picture-perfect husband,” Pine maaaaybe plays some kind of cult-like leader, and Wilde herself plays a supporting character. KiKi Layne, of If Beale Street Could Talk, replaced Dakota Johnson who had to exit the cast due to scheduling issues.

Though we don’t know exactly when Olivia and Harry started romancing, we do know that she was superrrr enthusiastic about his casting. In Harry’s iconic Vogue cover interview, Wilde admitted that she “did a little victory dance when we heard that we officially had Harry in the film.” And she didn’t stop there―she full-on gushed about Harry, telling Vogue:

“To me, he’s very modern, and I hope that this brand of confidence as a male that Harry has—truly devoid of any traces of toxic masculinity—is indicative of his generation and therefore the future of the world. I think he is in many ways championing that, spearheading that. It’s pretty powerful and kind of extraordinary to see someone in his position redefining what it can mean to be a man with confidence.”

Despite all that, uh, enthusiasm, Harry and Olivia apparently kept things professional while working together on-set. In case you haven’t already combusted into a fit of jealous rage, please direct your eyeballs over to this Instagram:

Allow me to copy and paste the swoon-inducing caption for easy perusal:

Little known fact: most male actors don’t want to play supporting roles in female-led films. The industry has raised them to believe it lessens their power (i.e financial value) to accept these roles, which is one of the reasons it’s so hard to get financing for movies focusing on female stories. No joke, it is harrrrrd to find actors who recognize why it might be worth it to allow for a woman to hold the spotlight. Enter: @harrystyles, our “Jack” . Not only did he relish the opportunity to allow for the brilliant @florencepugh to hold center stage as our “Alice”, but he infused every scene with a nuanced sense of humanity. He didn’t have to join our circus, but he jumped on board with humility and grace, and blew us away every day with his talent, warmth, and ability to drive backwards. 👊 #dontworrydarling

So yeah, everyone has a crush on Harry Styles, moving right along!

A COVID-19 positive test put production (temporarily) on pause

Lest we forget, we’re still living through a global pandemic, and even glamorous Hollywood isn’t immune. Don’t Worry Darling started production in early fall of 2020, but filming halted almost immediately when a member of the production tested positive for COVID-19 in November. According to Deadline, New Line studio confirmed that everyone on set isolated right away, and that filming picked back up after a 14-day pause, the recommended quarantine length.

Let’s discuss the plot ’cause it sounds juicy

Here’s what we know, thanks to Collider: Set in a “utopian community” in the California desert in the 1950s, Don’t Worry Darling tells the story of unhappy housewife (Florence Pugh) who begins to question her reality—and her husband (Harry Styles), who may or may not be hiding a “dark secret”—once weird stuff starts happening in their town. Wilde describes the movie as “very heightened and opulent” and “incredibly stylistic.” Sounds perfectly paranoia-inducing, I love it.

Filming has already wrapped

Florence Pugh announced as much when she posted the above Insta on February 14, writing “It’s official, it’s a wrap! Yesterday was our final day on the set of Don’t Worry Darling.” Olivia Wilde did the same, sharing a sweet behind-the-scenes pic and praising Pugh in the caption: “To work with an actor as talented and brave as @florencepugh is any director’s dream. I will forever be grateful for you, Flo. It was an honor to be your captain. Can’t wait for the world to see the astonishing work you’ve put into this movie.”

But the release date is still TBD

Considering it’s currently in post-production, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Don’t Worry Darling will come out towards the end of 2021. And hopefully we’ll get a proper trailer sooner than that. Until then, here’s hoping the cast and crew continue to post behind-the-scenes memories from set!
