Been waiting to see what happens after After? The latest adaptation from author Anna Todd’s After series, After We Collided, was released in theaters and on-demand on October 23. But, if you’re hoping to watch After We Collided on Netflix, don’t expect to find out what happens with Tessa (Josephine Langford), Hardin (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), and all their over-the-top drama anytime soon.
First things first, After is currently streaming on Netflix after arriving on the platform in October 2019. After was released in theaters in April 2019. Based on this alone, After We Collided could follow a similar pattern and hit Netflix six months after its own release date in April 2021.
If you can wait that long, great! The movie might be there in April. If not, let’s dive into the absolutely thrilling, not-at-all-confusing world of Netflix distribution deals.
After We Collided‘s distributor is Open Road Films. Netflix previously had a deal with Open Road, so while there are some older movies from the company on Netflix (The Promise, Before I Fall, and Sleepless, for example), not all of the films Open Road has put out in the past few years are there. This is because Open Road Films signed a deal with Showtime in 2013, which runs through 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The way Netflix distribution works is pretty complicated and different streaming services overlap in their deals, so this doesn’t mean that much when it comes to After We Collided. But, it is a second reason why the film could be more likely to appear in 2021 than in the next couple of months.
All of this said, if you want a small piece of hope that After We Collided will be on Netflix and get there sooner than April 2021, Decider reports that the window between release dates and arrival on streaming services has narrowed during the COVID-19 pandemic, since so many movies are being initially released on-demand rather than in theaters. Decider points to the movie Yes, God, Yes, which was released on-demand in July and hit Netflix three months later in October.
So, what should you do? Well, if you’re really looking forward to cozying up with this Harry Styles fan fiction-turned-book-turned-movie, it is available now on Amazon Prime, iTunes, Vudu, Google Play, and more to rent for $6.99 or buy for $14.99. If you want to watch it with your Netflix subscription, keep waiting and it might get there some day. You can always re-watch After.
