Transitioning from IISER BS-MS Programmes to IISc UG Programmes: The KVPY SB Path
In the realm of advanced education, many students look for opportunities to further their research and academic pursuits. One of the notable pathways is the transition from IISER (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research) BS-MS programmes to IISc (Indian Institute of Science) UG (4-year BSc) research programmes. This article explores the cases where students have shifted from IISER to IISc and the role of KVPY (Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana) Scholarships in facilitating this transition.
Uncommon but Occurring Shifts
The shift from IISER BS-MS to IISc UG programmes is not a common occurrence, but it does happen from time to time. Students generally choose to stay in their current institution or even opt out of pursuing further studies in research for various reasons. However, there are rare cases where students decide to transition to IISc for their undergraduate research. One such example is through the KVPY SB (Scholarship) programme.
The KVPY SB as a Path to Transition
The KVPY programme is a prestigious scholarship for talented students in science and mathematics. It offers scholarships to bright students to foster their aptitude in science and technology. Students who have left the BS-MS programmes at IISER to join the UG programme at IISc typically achieved success through their performances in the KVPY SB exams. Let's delve deeper into one such instance.

My batch, which was around one year junior to the student who made the shift, had one instance where a student chose to move from IISER to IISc. This student was able to secure a position through the KVPY SB, thereby providing an opportunity for a seamless transition.
Infrequent but Known Shifts
Similarly, in batches that were one or two years senior to me, I recall another instance where a student shifted from IISER Mohali (now known as IISRAM) to IISER Pune. These examples illustrate that while it is rare, there are known instances of such transitions. In fact, there might be a few more such cases that exist, as students sometimes choose to make this move despite the challenges involved.
Why Else Would Students Choose Not to Shift?
It is important to note that even when eligible, many students choose to remain at their current IISER institutions. This decision could be influenced by various factors such as a strong connection to their current academic environment, the quality of local research facilities, or personal preferences. Ultimately, the choice to stay or transition is a deeply personal one that varies from student to student.
Conclusion
While the transition from IISER to IISc is not a common occurrence, instances do exist. The KVPY SB plays a crucial role in these transitions, offering opportunities for students who perform exceptionally well in the scholarship exams. This article has highlighted a couple of cases and the role of KVPY SB in enabling such transitions. If you have further questions or seek more detailed information, please feel free to ask.
