The Saddest Reasons Behind Poor Student Performance
Every year, teachers encounter various challenges and scenarios in their classrooms. One of the most heartbreaking instances is when a student performs poorly due to reasons far beyond their control. Smallville University had a student failing several of their classes. The student asked for an“incomplete”in one of mine, but I had to explain that their failing status made them ineligible. Shortly after, I received an email from our Title IX office granting the student an exception for an incomplete. When I met with the student, I realized they had experienced a major trauma. Later, I found out that the student's descent into failing grades coincided with a series of attacks at student housing. I strongly believe this was due to the attacks, and I provided support, hoping they could continue their therapy and finish their degree.
A Memorial Service and Lost Souls
The hardest lesson I've ever had to learn was not being able to return papers to a student’s discussion section. Two weeks before graduation, a student died, and I couldn't hold on to the joy of their progress. I attended the memorial service, where the absence of this young, vibrant soul hit us all deeply. Thankfully, he graduated and is now doing well, pursuing a career as a talented photographer.
