The Infinite Universe: A Never-Ending Space of Endless Possibilities
The concept of 'universe' can be interpreted in two ways. It can refer to the vast expanse of space that surrounds us, or it can refer to everything that occupies that space. My understanding is that the space itself is infinite, eternal, and unchanging. It has always existed and continues to exist, extending endlessly without an end. This infinite space is not in a state of growth or expansion.
On the other hand, our 'known universe' is the edge of all the 'stuff' within this infinite space. The boundary of what we currently know as the universe is the distance from us, beyond which light has not yet reached us. The universe as we know it, the stuff in it, is expanding at the speed of light in all directions.
Look around you, and that is what you see. The universe, as far as we can ascertain, is both never-ending and continuously expanding.
Energy flows in a cycle where all matter eventually collapses towards the center before starting anew. This infinite cycle of collapse and re-birth may be what gives rise to the perception of an eternal universe. However, I leave the exploration of this concept to the theoretical physicists, as it does not fundamentally impact our daily lives. Grass grows, cows eat it, flowers bloom, and we must tend to our tasks.
Even as the universe may be infinite and eternal, the individual life of each person is finite. The idea of the universe never ending holds little significance when it comes to the limited span of human existence and personal experiences.
Time and space are constructs that we humans have created based on the data we receive from our limited sensory experiences. It is entirely conceivable that there exists a reality beyond the constraints of time and space. In a reality devoid of time and space, everything could be existentially present in the 'now'. The concept of infinity, in this case, would not be about space extending forever, but about the absence of spatiality. Similarly, eternity would not be about time going on infinitely, but about experiencing timelessness.
While we ponder these abstract concepts, it is important to consider the practical implications these ideas might have on our understanding of reality. These thoughts are intriguing and may help us to rethink our place in the vast expanse of the cosmos. However, for the most part, they do not significantly alter our day-to-day existence and should not hinder our ability to create, innovate, and exist.
