Starting School at the Indian Naval Academy: A New Journey of Self-Discovery
The first day at the Indian Naval Academy is a transformative experience that every cadet remembers for a lifetime. This journey marks a significant transition, starting with the moment one abandons their dated title and dons the role of a cadet.
The Arrival and Initial Setup
On a sunny Sunday in July, I arrived in Panjim, Goa, alongside my father and younger brother, having checked into a hotel the day before. We rented a cab, which turned out to be rather expensive, for a trip across the river. After lunch, we arrived at the gates of the academy. We were directed to the DTO (Deputy Training Officer) office where my father bid me farewell, saying I was about to become a man.
This sentiment seemed ominous as I faced five seniors who were dressed smartly in black trousers and white shirts, along with cummerbunds. I was assigned a huge black trunk which carried everything needed for the next five months. Feeling a sense of pride, I made my way to the Destroyer Squadron.
By evening, my squadron attire was in place and we marched off to watch a movie, introducing me to some of my future course mates.
A Day Remembered: The Initial Challenges and Responsibilities
For the first two weeks, you are not toucheda period of easing into the environment. Life was relatively easy, until two Sundays passed. On those days, the seniors who were under punishment instructed that you should not look at them. I faced my first challenge quite soon.
The first day of college at the academy was crucial. When you first arrived, you gave up the title of 'Mr' in favor of the more formal 'Cadet'. Only a few individuals in the country can earn this prestigious title. Equality rules the day, and everyone is given the 'zero cut' and integrated into a single group, regardless of their social status.
You are allotted a squadron, which will be your new home away from home. Each squadron imparts the same fundamental values but in different ways. This place fosters bonds between your course mates, seniors, and juniors, marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with lessons both bitter and sweet.
The Routine and Initial Tasks
My journey began with a zero cut haircut on Sunday. After that, documents were checked, and I was assigned to my squadron. The next day, life started early with academy darshan at 0500 hours, followed by physical training classes, games, study periods in the evening, dinner, and late-night ragdas. Although Sundays are a different story, I wouldn't want to relive the unexpected challenges associated with them.
The rigorous training and challenges you face at the academy are daunting but ultimately rewarding. When you graduate from the temple of the academy, you feel a sense of satiation. The rank you achieve and the glory attached to your name are worth it all.
Conclusion
The experience at the Indian Naval Academy is a mix of discipline, camaraderie, and self-discovery. It is a challenge that shapes you as an individual and prepares you for the rigorous and demanding life of a naval officer. If you are ready to embark on this journey, remember, it is a path that will make you a better and stronger person.
