The Experience of Attending a Jewish College or University
As an experienced alumnus of what was the Lee College at the University of Judaism, now known as the American Jewish University (AJU), and the College of Arts and Sciences, my time there was a unique and enriching journey. Graduating over twenty years ago, I have given much thought to what it was like to be a student at a Jewish institution and how my experiences there shaped my life.
Unique Campus Environment
One of the most distinctive aspects of attending a Jewish college or university is the close-knit community. The small size of the institution, with almost everyone knowing each other, especially the undergraduate students, fostered a sense of community and belonging. Students who stayed on campus on Saturdays could enjoy Shabbat services and luncheon, creating a rich and meaningful atmosphere.
Spiritual and Cultural Opportunities
A kosher dining hall was a cornerstone of the campus experience, offering a supportive environment for those following traditional kosher dietary laws. The academic offerings, particularly in Jewish history and culture, were also exceptional. The opportunity to study with some of the greatest Jewish minds of my generation—such as Elliot Dorff, Benzi Bergman, Zioni Zevit, and Robert Wexler—was invaluable and deeply influential.
A Unique Academic Journey
My experience involved obtaining a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in psychology, although I informally pursued a double major in Jewish history and culture. The curriculum was designed to integrate Jewish academic traditions with a broad liberal arts education. This unique blend offered a profound understanding of the cultural and philosophical aspects of Judaism alongside the scientific and social sciences, providing a holistic educational experience.
Student Life and Community Involvement
In addition to academic pursuits, Jewish colleges and universities often offer a variety of extracurricular activities and religious services. I participated in various student organizations and Jewish religious activities, which deepened my understanding of Judaism and my connection to the broader Jewish community. This engagement was not just limited to religion but also included social, cultural, and educational events that fostered a sense of responsibility and contribution to the community.
Comparing Experiences
I also had the opportunity to study at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, which provided me with a different but equally enriching experience. While it was a large university with its own distinct atmosphere, the rigorous academic environment and the exposure to diverse cultures and perspectives were highly beneficial. Both institutions have their unique strengths, and I highly recommend both the American Jewish University and Hebrew University to potential students.
Attending a Jewish college or university can be an incredible opportunity to delve deeply into your faith, culture, and academic pursuits. It provides a unique environment that supports personal growth and a strong sense of community. If you are considering such an institution, prepare yourself for a journey filled with learning, reflection, and a deep connection to your heritage.
