The Divergent Origins and Evolution of Alphabetical Order
The Early Days of Alphabetical Order
The origins of the order of the letters in the alphabet are lost to history. While we can trace the evolution of several alphabets, the specific reasons behind the order of the letters remain unclear. The alphabet we use today has evolved from early scripts such as the Ugaritic and Phoenician scripts.
The Ugaritic and Phoenician Scripts
The earliest abecedaria or ordered lists of letters found in archaeology were discovered for the Ugaritic script in two alphabetic orders. These orders showed how the Northern Semitic order was inherited by subsequent scripts such as Phoenician, Greek, Old Italic, and Latin. The Southern Semitic order, from Ugaritic to Ancient North and South Arabian scripts, also evolved in a similar way.

The Choice of Order
Many people have wondered why the alphabet begins with A and ends with Z. The alphabetical order was ordered by the Phoenicians who originated the alphabet. The names of the letters like alpha and beta are actually the Greek forms of the Phoenician words for "ox" and "house." However, whether there was a story or poem that influenced the order is lost in the mists of time.
Modern Alphabet and Tradition
The current form of the Latin alphabet, which we use to write modern English, was largely codified by the Phoenicians. Although the shapes of the glyphs have changed over time and some additional letters were added, the fundamental structure of the Phoenician alphabet remains the foundation of the Latin alphabet.
The Arbitrary Nature of Alphabetic Order
Having a fixed order to an alphabet is useful, but there is no inherent reason why the order should be preferred over others. The order of an alphabet is essentially arbitrary, shaped more by tradition and practicality than any inherent logic. This is different from some non-alphabetic scripts, which may have a more logical or phonetic basis for their order.
