Student Life at the University of Mississippi: Discovering Oxford and Beyond

Life as an undergraduate at the University of Mississippi extends beyond the classroom, offering a plethora of opportunities to explore the charming town of Oxford and surrounding areas. Whether you're planning to spend weekends in the grove or venturing far and wide, there's a world of experiences waiting to be discovered. Let's dive into the best weekend activities that make Oxford and the University of Mississippi truly special.

Exploring Oxford and the University Campus

Oxford and the University of Mississippi have changed dramatically over the past 46 years since I was a student. While the town is more extensive than it appears, it still retains a small-town charm that is hard to beat. As a student, it was common to find friends gathered for impromptu gatherings outside of fraternity functions. The campus, one of the most beautiful in the country, offers an abundance of opportunities for students to unwind, engage in physical activities, and enjoy the great outdoors.

The Grove and Turner Center

On campus, the Grove is a central location where students can study, socialize, and relax. Whether you prefer to study in the serene environment or grab a snack and a coffee from one of the many nearby cafes, the Grove is a hub of student life. The Turner Center, a state-of-the-art facility, provides students with access to a variety of sports and recreational activities, including basketball, table tennis, racquetball, squash, a swimming pool, and even a fretball court and tennis courts. Talks of an improved facility being constructed to replace Turner Center are in the works, ensuring that students will continue to have access to top-notch resources.

Exploring Campus for Free

Are you a fan of frugal entertainment? The University of Mississippi offers plenty of free activities on campus. From baseball to football games, there's something for every sporting enthusiast. Intramural fields provide opportunities to play a variety of sports with friends, and the university often hosts free events for students. If you are an art lover, you can visit the university's art museum, which is open to the public and offers a rich collection of exhibits.

Off-Campus Adventures

While the campus and the town of Oxford offer plenty of activities, students at the University of Mississippi also have the opportunity to explore the city and beyond. With access to a car or with the help of transportation services like Uber or Lyft, the possibilities are nearly limited only by your imagination.

Thrive in the City of Oxford

The city of Oxford has a vibrant central square, which is one of the main attractions. This hub of activity is home to a wide range of bars, clubs, and restaurants, making it the perfect spot for a night out. In addition to the square, there are numerous great locations for food enthusiasts to explore around the city. For those who love movies, there are two Malco theaters nearby where you can catch the latest films. The theaters often show different movies, so it's worth checking which location offers the movie you want to see. While the theaters themselves are not the most luxurious, they are still comfortable.

Sunday mornings can be spent at Lamar Park, a wonderful place to spend time with friends. The park features a pond with limited fishing regulations, making it a great spot to go for a jog, walk your dog, or have a picnic. It's also an excellent place to organize a group activity or simple relaxation. If you're interested in cycling, the university has plenty of biking trails, and there are even options to rent a bicycle from the campus.

Outdoor Activities and More

For off-campus adventures, students have plenty of options. Lake Sardis is a popular destination for those seeking a fun day away from campus. While bonfires are not legally permitted, you'll find plenty of groups doing it nevertheless. Remember to bring your own supplies if you want to enjoy a picnic or other activities on the lake. If you have your own car, the options are even more extensive. You can head to Memphis, home to the famous Beale Street, or attend a game for the Memphis Grizzlies or Redbirds. For those who enjoy a more adventurous weekend, there are casinos in nearby Tunica, and historic southern towns to explore.

The Best Of Every Weekend

As an Ole Miss Rebel, it's important to make the most of every day and weekend. Whether you're studying in the Grove, enjoying the culinary scene in Oxford, or exploring the city beyond, there's plenty to do. Remember, time flies fast, and graduation day will arrive before you know it. So, go enjoy every moment and make unforgettable memories as you transition from an undergraduate to a proud alumnus of the University of Mississippi.
