Strong Extra-Curricular Activities for International Students Applying to Top US Universities
As an international student preparing to start grade 11 and hoping to apply to top American universities, the prospect of extracurricular activities might seem overwhelming. However, the key to distinguishing yourself lies not in boasting about your self-serving efforts, but in consistently engaging in activities that demonstrate your passion, perseverance, and dedication.
Getting into Universities as an International Student
The process of getting into a university, especially as an international student, may seem challenging. The good news is that it is not as difficult as it might appear, particularly with the generous financial aid available. However, even with financial support, the costs can still be substantial, often surpassing $30,000 annually. Merely relying on financial aid might not be sufficient, and institutions like some top universities are highly selective, with extremely competitive admission rates.
It's important to note that earning a bachelor's degree in your home country and then coming to the US for postgraduate study can be a viable alternative. This path allows you to gain foundational knowledge and experiences in your home country before pursuing higher education in the United States. Here are some considerations for choosing this route:
Educational Quality: Ensure that your home university provides a high-quality education and strong support for international students. Transferability of Credits: Look for universities that have strong transfer agreements to facilitate your transition to a US institution. Financial Planning: Understand the costs and potential financial aid available in the US versus your current institution.Whatare Strong Extra-Curricular Activities?
The ideal extracurricular activities for a US university or for an international student are those that demonstrate your exceptional passion, perseverance, dedication, and long-term commitment. Here are three examples to illustrate this point:
Student Government
Leadership roles like General Secretary, SGA President, and other elected positions at your university can be incredibly impactful. For instance, serving as General Secretary at IIT Bombay, one of India's most prestigious engineering schools, is a testament to your dedication. I was elected to this position multiple times at different levels, from hostel dorm to departmental, and even the university level.
Not only did these positions require rigorous work and coordination, but they also led to significant changes. For example, the musical and entertainment events we created continue to be a cherished tradition nearly half a century later. The joy students experience today when seeing the legacy of the logo I designed decades ago is a prime example of leaving an indelible mark on a community.
Theater
Participating in theater and performing arts can also showcase your passion and dedication. Winning Gold Medals in Theater for acting, direction, and production, and acting in professional theater productions in Bombay (now Mumbai) demonstrate your commitment to excellence. As a graduate student, winning first prize in an All-India competition and staging a professional play further solidify your achievements.
National Cadet Corps (NCC) and Scouting
Engaging in activities like NCC and Scouting can be incredibly rewarding. NCC, the equivalent of ROTC in the US, allowed me to rise through the ranks and eventually reach the position of Senior Under Officer after passing all exams and tests. Scouting in India also provided significant opportunities for advancement, culminating in the prestigious titles of President’s Scout, Jungle Gopher, and Gold Cord Eagle.
These activities not only require years of hard work but they also foster leadership, teamwork, and a sense of service to others. The lifelong impact of these activities is evident in the enduring legacy they leave behind.
Start Early and Be Consistent
The quest for a great letter of recommendation or college application starts three and a half years before you even begin your college search. Consistency in your extracurricular activities is crucial. It's not just about the recognition or achievements, but the long-term impact and the dedication you demonstrate over an extended period.
Ultimately, what distinguishes you is not just what you do, but how you do it and the lasting impact you leave behind. Focus on activities that align with your passions and demonstrate your commitment to making a difference, and you will be on your way to standing out in the highly competitive world of college admissions.
