St. Xavier's University Kolkata: A Comprehensive Review for BA LLB Students

St. Xavier's University Kolkata, particularly renowned for its BA LLB honors program, is a reputable educational institution in the city. As a current student, I can provide an honest review of this university based on my personal experience and the current state of the institution.

The Academic Environment

St. Xavier's University Kolkata was inaugurated in 2017, with its law school coming into existence in August 2019. Joining a new university carries its own risks, but St. Xavier's leverages the well-respected Xavier tag to your advantage.

The Faculty and Curriculum

Regarding faculties and curriculum, the faculty is remarkably supportive and knowledgeable. With a few exceptions, they are approachable and dedicated to resolving any academic questions or doubts you might have. The curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of legal and academic subjects, matching what fellow students at other institutions might learn.

The Campus Environment

The campus itself is truly inspiring. It covers a vast 17 acres and is equipped with all the necessary facilities to cater to a diverse set of student needs. You'll find an auditorium, a well-stocked library, a recreational area, computer labs, a basketball court, and even a badminton court. The classrooms are air-conditioned, ensuring a comfortable learning environment. Additionally, the university offers hostels for students' convenience.

Placement Opportunities and Career Prospects

A key aspect to consider when choosing a university is the placement scenario. While St. Xavier's has established the Xavier Law School as a reputable institution, the placement statistics for the first batch of law students do not paint a particularly rosy picture.

MBA Placements

The 2018-20 MBA batch saw a mix of package offers. An average package of 6.5 LPA was observed, which, considering the fees of around 14 Lakhs for a 2-year course, is not cost-effective. Some companies hired mass recruiters, which is concerning for students. Only a few secured packages above 7 LPA, with the highest being 12 LPA.

Bachelor's Placements

The bachelor's degree placement scenario is equally challenging. In the 2020 batch, only 32 students out of the entire course were placed. This number is abysmal given the number of students, many from affluent backgrounds who are not primarily job hunters. The placements for the Masters Degree (non-MBA) courses are not significantly better, with only 55 out of 122 registered students securing placements.

Despite these challenges, the university emphasizes that exclusive treatment is given to the Business school and Law school. This could potentially translate to improved placement rates in the future for those courses.

Conclusion

St. Xavier's University Kolkata is an academically sound institution with a promising faculty and well-equipped facilities. However, the placement metrics for bachelor's and non-MBA students remain a concern. It is crucial for students to weigh their personal goals and career aspirations before making a decision.

Whether you're passionate about litigation or pursuing a different academic path, St. Xavier's offers a solid foundation. It’s up to you to decide if it aligns with your career objectives. Good luck!
