Reflections on Major Choices and Career Paths
Many of us face the mandate to decide on a major during our college years, a choice that can dramatically influence our future career trajectories. In my case, I chose English: Creative Writing, primarily poetry, as my major. My rationale was simple: it seemed like the easiest way to fulfill my degree requirements. However, this decision proved to be less practical than anticipated, especially in terms of job preparation and the sheer amount of reading required.
The Chosen Path
When I first embarked on this journey, I was not fully aware of how much academic rigor and dedication would be necessary. The coursework was demanding, and I struggled to find the balance between completing assignments and enjoying my studies. Despite my enthusiasm, the process was arduous and at times, a bit overwhelming.
As I progressed through my first year, my passion for creative writing began to wane, and I found myself occasionally skipping classes to focus on other personal matters, such as falling in love. By the second year, realizing that I had not fully embraced the true essence of my major, I sought a shift in direction. And thus began a personal journey of self-discovery.
Discovering True Passions
One realization dawned on me as I approached the latter stages of my second year: I was not truly into agriculture, as I had once thought. Instead, I discovered a deep love for gardening. While agriculture is about cultivating crops, gardening is a creative and therapeutic hobby that involves connecting with nature, nurturing green life, and appreciating the beauty of the earth.
Conversely, agriculture can often be associated with complex procedures, scientific jargon, and a plethora of numbers that seemed irrelevant to my desires. This epiphany led me to reevaluate my academic and career aspirations. By the time I entered my final year, I had made a decisive shift into writing.
A Progressive Metamorphosis
Since making this shift, my academic journey and personal growth have been nothing short of transformative. I have found immense value in disciplines that challenge me to think critically, fostering a fertile ground for creativity and innovative problem-solving skills. Reading and writing, far from being mere accumulations of knowledge, have evolved into tools that help me generate original ideas and crack complex issues with novel solutions.
The benefits of reading and writing extend beyond the acquisition of facts. These practices cultivate a powerful internal mechanism – a machine that can produce ideas almost at will, even when least expected. Strategic thinking and the ability to find solutions in unique and unexpected places have become second nature to me. This development aligns perfectly with the goal of global betterment: using creativity and innovation to address and solve pressing problems.
Conclusion
My experience exemplifies the importance of choosing a major that aligns with one's true passions and long-term goals. By embracing my love for writing and gardening, I have discovered a fulfilling path that not only enriches my life but also prepares me to make a positive impact in the world. While I may not have fully realized the potential of my initial major choice, the journey of self-discovery has been invaluable.
