Exploring My Academic Influences
Over the years, a diverse array of individuals have played pivotal roles in shaping my academic journey. Each of them brought unique qualities and insights that have helped me navigate both successes and challenges in my education.
High School English Teacher
The person who comes to mind first is my high school English teacher. She was not only the smartest person I ever met in English and history but also someone who saw potential in me. Even in my ninth-grade year, she took the time to develop my academic abilities, starting with a summer reading list that included some of the greats. Her guidance helped me graduate sixth in my high school class, a group of around 275 students. Moreover, she instilled in me the confidence that I was smart and capable of competing at any level. This experience underscores the profound impact a dedicated mentor can have on a student's life.
Dr. Einstein and the Pursuit of Math and Science
Dr. Einstein has always been a significant influence in my life, especially with regard to my interest in math and science. This is where I felt most aligned with his genius and contributions to the field, and his ideas continue to inspire me. Dr. Einstein's work in his field is not just about the scientific achievements; it's also about the broader philosophical and ethical questions that science raises. His influence extends beyond the classroom and deeply into my personal and professional aspirations.
Art Teacher and Art History Professor
While we usually think of academics, other teachers have also left indelible marks on my life. The high school art teacher and one of my college art history professors are two who immediately come to mind. They approached their subjects with passion and belief in their students, qualities that I strive to emulate. Their unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in my development as an artist, and I am forever grateful for their guidance.
Self-Improvement and Personal Growth
While I have had many influences, I must acknowledge the role of self-improvement in my journey. Often, the greatest motivation comes from within, and dedicating time to better oneself can lead to significant transformations. My resolve to improve has been a constant driving force, helping me to overcome obstacles and achieve academic and personal milestones.
Film Teacher and Filmmaking
My film teacher, whose name I have chosen to keep confidential, had a profound impact on my career as a filmmaker. Not only did he inspire me, but he also provided me with skills and positions that fostered my growth. Throughout the filming process, he offered valuable guidance and support, which has been invaluable. His influence on my work ethic and artistic vision is immeasurable.
Personal Support: Daughters and Significant Other
The most influential people in my life, however, are my daughters and my significant other. They have always been there with unwavering moral support, especially during challenging times. Going back to school after over 50 years of not being in a classroom was a significant challenge. Adapting to the changes and maintaining morale were tough, but they helped me overcome the obstacles and continue on my educational journey.
Theory and Practice in Philosopher of Education
My professional life as a philosopher of education shaped my perspective on education theory and practice. After my PhD defense, I was appointed to develop an epistemic model for a project examining young people's social media and privacy. A senior professor from the project team, despite not being the principal investigator, dismissed my contributions, leading me to focus on economics instead of philosophy and anthropology. This experience deeply impacted my motivation, leading me to formulate a hypothetical response to the professor's dismissive attitude. My work since then has been driven by a desire to create a more comprehensive and pluralistic model of human nature and motivation, grounded in theoretical and empirical evidence.
