Preparing for the UGEE 2021 Interview
The experience of my own interview in UGEE 2021 is a remembrance of what can happen if proper preparation isn't taken seriously. The year 2021 brought several challenges, including an online interview conducted via MS Teams. At the time, I was highly motivated and optimistic about my chances. To prepare, I obtained a free copy of the IIITHprep interview book, but it turned out to be a complete waste of time. Moreover, I participated in Vedantu’s Eklavaya program, where experienced mentors like Adil Ali Nirban conducted 3 sets of 1-hour mock interviews. Despite performing well in all of them, the interview process was fraught with unexpected challenges.
Confirmatory Interview and The Interview Day
On the confirmatory interview date, my setup was tested, and the final interview was scheduled for 9:15 AM on August 6th. However, the interview never materialized and was delayed until 12:45 PM. When I was finally called in, the experience was both anticipated and confusing. The interviewer started with personal questions, such as my living situation in Kolkata and my knowledge of the river Ganga. After a monologue about the importance of rivers, another interviewer interrupted and directed me to the main questions.
Interview Questions
The interview began with a set of 6 statements, followed by a request to identify if they were contradictory or not. I answered "no," only to be told they were contradictory. After a brief thought, I identified the flaw. The second question was a simple logic-based conditional probability problem, and I answered it correctly quickly. The third and most challenging question dealt with a river while trekking through the hills. Despite the simplest solution being the most effective, I took a long and convoluted approach, which ultimately wasted precious time. I was removed from the interview after only 7 minutes when the time limit was nearing.
Lessons Learned
The experience was a valuable learning opportunity. The key takeaway was to follow the simplest approach, akin to Occam's Razor. Regret and disappointment followed, but the interview was a significant learning experience. After the interview, I realized the Occam's Razor approach would have been the best solution. Here is the correct answer for the river question:
Answer: Use basic trigonometry or the Pythagorean theorem to determine the width of the river based on the angle of the trekking path and the tree on the other side.
