Understanding My Background and Preparation
Entering the KVPY SX interview, I was a class 11th student who had recently faced a setback by not clearing the first stage of the examination. Additionally, it was the first time I was about to experience an interview setting, which naturally added to my nervousness. Guided by limited online resources, I made a strategic decision to focus on my favorite subject, mathematics, and a favorite topic within it: continuity. This approach aimed to showcase my enthusiasm and clarity in my chosen areas.
The Pre-Interview Setup
I arrived at IISER Bhopal for my interview, where I was the second last candidate scheduled. Walking into the interview, I opted for a comfortable, yet professional outfit consisting of a blue T-shirt and a relatively informal pair of pants. This casual yet neat appearance was a deliberate choice to demonstrate my confidence and familiarity with the environment.
Navigating the Interview Process
The interview began with a straightforward question: 'What is your favorite topic?' My prepared statement on continuity served as a strong opening. Following this, the interviewers asked me to define continuity in mathematical terms. They then posed a challenging question involving multiple variables and n problems, subtly leading me towards the concept of a matrix. My ability to recognize and articulate matrices was a significant turning point. The interviewers were visibly pleased when I made a mention of matrices, addressing their expectations. According to them, no one had successfully navigated that question before me, giving me a distinct advantage.
Additional Questions and Future Plans
After the initial challenge, the interviewers moved on to physics, questioning me about wave motion, followed by a chemistry question about the non-existence of NCl5. These questions served as a blend of academic rigor and a test of my problem-solving skills. The interview concluded with a brief discussion on my future plans, detailing my aspirations and goals for higher education.
