Navigating the Fascinating and Challenging 'Why' Questions of Childhood

Children are notorious for their curious nature, especially as they grow older and begin to notice the world around them. One of the most common activities in any household is the endless questioning from little ones, especially around 2 or 3 in the morning! These questions can be incredibly insightful and sometimes incredibly challenging to answer. Here are a few examples that many parents and guardians have faced.

Why Are Leaves Green?

One of the more common and intriguing questions comes from a 9-year-old niece. She asked, "Why are leaves green?" As someone with a background in biology, I was well aware of the interaction between chlorophyll and the light spectrum. However, the real question seems to be a deeper one: why does this specific interaction happen?I tried my best to explain the role of chlorophyll and the basics of photosynthesis, but her curiosity was not fully satiated. She wanted to know:- Why does light interact with the molecules in this specific way?- Why is chlorophyll the only pigment capable of photosynthesis?- Why don't red or other pigments have the same capacity?After a long and exhausting conversation, we both left the discussion with a renewed appreciation for the complexity of natural phenomena.

Complex Questions and Common Misunderstandings

Another memorable moment came when the same niece asked a question during a story about two women wanting to get pregnant through in vitro fertilization (IVF). The question was: "Why is she pregnant if they both are women?"This is an easy question to explain with current scientific knowledge: in IVF, the egg is fertilized in a lab and then transferred to a uterus. However, for her, it wasn't about the science; it was about the relationship and the concept of pregnancy. This question reflects a deeper understanding of human relationships and biological processes.

Another challenge comes when children ask questions that touch on more complex and sensitive topics. For instance, my sons once asked what a "hooker" meant. I responded by saying it was a woman who knits or crochets, which was a quick and easy lie. However, it was clear that their curiosity was beyond that surface-level explanation. It is important to be honest and direct when addressing difficult questions. Explaining concepts in a way that is appropriate and understandable for their age can help build trust and strengthen the bond between you and your child.
