My Journey into Charity: A Personal Experience and Advice

Introduction

My involvement with charity has been both direct and indirect, stemming from a deep-seated belief in helping those in need. While I have not been actively involved with charity events in a formal capacity, I have volunteered in charity shops and have participated in community support initiatives. This journey has been motivated by a fundamental acknowledgment that not everyone has the equal opportunity to thrive. As my father once said, 'A rich man cannot eat two dinners at once,' highlighting that we must share our resources to ensure that everyone has a hand to hold in tough times.

Getting Involved

While my direct involvement in charity may not have been substantial, I have been indirectly involved in various ways through my church. I have seen the impact that community events and support services can have on the lives of those who are less fortunate. One such notable instance occurred when a County Councillor visited our church and presented us with a grant towards our new building. This grant allowed us to address our needs and plan for the future. During this visit, the Councillor posed a thought-provoking question: 'So what are you going to do about the community?' This question made us realize that we had not adequately addressed the needs of our local community, which sparked a new initiative. We began by arranging a weekly hot breakfast opportunity for the homeless and disadvantaged. This has been a rewarding experience, with our organization welcoming between 55-65 people each week, many of whom became regular volunteers and friends.

Guidance for Future Invivors

If you are looking to get involved in charity work, the first step is to decide where you want to give. You can choose to support local, national, or international causes. Once you have identified where your passion lies, you can look for appropriate charities. There are several online resources that can help you investigate the efficiency of charities. Organizations such as Charity Watch and Charity Navigator provide valuable insights into how effectively charities use the funds they receive. Personally, I prefer to support charities that spend less than 15% of their funds on fundraising and administration.

To get started, consider donating money, goods, or services. Whether you are sending a check, donating stocks, bonds, or volunteering your time, every contribution makes a difference. Remember, giving is a joy, and it can bring immense satisfaction and fulfillment. By choosing to support those in need, you are part of a larger community that is working towards making a positive impact on society.
