My Journey Post-BDS: From UPSC Aspirant to Research Associate and Beyond

Introduction

After completing my Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course, my journey took a few unexpected turns. Here, I share my experiences from preparing for the UPSC exams, working as a house surgeon, and pursuing post-graduation studies.

Preparing for UPSC and Tutoring

For six months, I focused on preparing for the UPSC exams and also tutored ninth-grade students. Throughout this period, I actively searched for job opportunities and participated in numerous interviews. After an enthusiastic seven months of preparation, I was finally selected for an international project as a research associate. This role offered me a unique opportunity to engage in research outside the traditional clinical setting, which I found both challenging and rewarding.

House Surgeon and Specialty Training

After my time as a research associate, I worked as a house surgeon for a year and six months in Orthopedic Surgery (OS). Subsequently, I switched to a six-month stint in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics (Endo). With this experience under my belt, I decided to dive into post-graduate studies. Passing the Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) entrance exam, I officially entered the post-graduate program, marking the beginning of a new academic journey.

Exploring Further Specialization

Data shows that there is a growing demand for specialized dental professionals. Unlike many who opt to open their clinics immediately after completing their BDS degree, I recognized a lack of preference for general BDS practitioners. Therefore, I decided to pursue an MDS, even while still in the first year of my BDS program. My goal is to enhance my expertise and contribute more effectively to the field of dentistry.

Non-Clinical Roles and Personal Initiatives

Following my BDS, I briefly joined an NGO, where I soon realized that the non-clinical tasks outweighed the clinical work. Feeling the need to stay active in practice, I shifted to working in a dental clinic. I also continued to apply for Junior Resident (JR) positions in government hospitals to keep my skills sharp. This period was also marked by the launch of my YouTube channel, Battisi - The 32 Teeth, and social media accounts like Instagram (@battisi_32) and Facebook (DoctorJasmineSinghPage).

Continuing Education and Future Aspirations

Upon completing my post-graduation, I undertook clinical training under a senior dentist for one and a half years. Six years post-BDS, I started my own clinic. Six years later, I joined a faculty position, and am currently undergoing a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncology. This continuous pursuit of knowledge and specialization is what fuels my passion and dedication to the field of dentistry.

These personal and professional experiences have shaped my career trajectory and provided a solid foundation for my future endeavors. My journey post-BDS is a testament to the multifaceted nature of my career path and the opportunities that come with a dedication to lifelong learning.
