My Journey Learning Japanese: From N3 to N1 Certification
It's a pleasure to write about my personal journey of learning the Japanese language. Over the years, I have gained significant proficiency and even passed the JLPT N1 exam. Let me share my story and provide insights into the best way to learn Japanese if you're in Bangalore.
Official Japanese Language Training
My journey with Japanese began when I was part of the On Job Trainee program, which required nine months of official Japanese language training from a native Japanese national. This intensive training was sufficient for me to clear the JLPT N3. Subsequently, I was on my own, working in Japanese companies, which further enhanced my ability to speak and write Japanese.
The transition from N3 to N2 came naturally as I immersed myself in Japanese culture, language, and work. The experience of living and working in Japan for a year naturally propelled me to the N2 level, where I no longer felt the need to pursue the higher JLPT levels, as it wasn’t a prerequisite for my work.
The JLPT N1 Certification
Years passed, and as my family started to learn Japanese and passed the N4 level, I decided to take the JLPT N1 exam for the first time. Although it seemed overwhelming, I was fortunate to have plenty of exposure to the language, which made the exam relatively easy for me. It became a habit to periodically challenge myself with the JLPT N1 exam, maintaining a 100% passing record over five attempts.
Learning Japanese at Navis Institute
I am currently learning Japanese through Navis, an institute located in Bangalore. Navis is renowned for its rigorous and immersive approach to teaching Japanese. All my teachers (senseis) are Native Japanese speakers, ensuring that I learn the language as it is spoken in Japan. They do not rely on English, which is the best way to fully grasp the nuances of the Japanese language.
Navis provides two core learning materials: a textbook for vocabulary comprehension and grammar exercises, and another book dedicated to Kanji. Additionally, I receive detailed notes for grammar. Frequent tests are a regular part of the curriculum to ensure we retain the new knowledge.
Effective Japanese Language Study Techniques
The learning journey doesn’t end in the classroom. I make a significant investment of my time and efforts to ensure I am fluent in Japanese. Here are some effective techniques that I find essential:
1. Reading and Watching Japanese Media
I regularly read Japanese Quora posts and watch Japanese movies, anime, and listen to Japanese songs with subtitles. This exposure helps me learn new Kanji characters and get used to the language. Regular practice is key to retaining the knowledge and improving fluency.
2. Building Language Habit
Simply learning the language isn’t enough; it’s crucial to immerse yourself in it by making it a part of your daily routine. By consistently engaging with the Japanese language and culture, you can enhance your understanding and retention.
3. Setting Personal Goals
Challenging myself with the JLPT N1 exam has not only provided me with a sense of achievement but has also kept me motivated to improve my skills. Setting personal goals can be an excellent way to stay focused and push yourself to new levels of proficiency.
Conclusion
In conclusion, learning Japanese is a journey that requires dedication, immersion, and consistent practice. From N3 to N1, my experience has shown that the right resources and a strong commitment can lead to significant language proficiency. If you’re in Bangalore and looking for an institution to learn Japanese, Navis is highly recommended.
