JEE Drop Year Experience: A Personal Journey
Many students take a drop year after their initial attempts at the JEE Joint Entrance Examination to improve their scores and increase their chances of getting into their desired engineering colleges. If you're considering a drop year, this personal account of my journey can provide valuable insights into what you can expect.
Study Plan and Coaching
My JEE preparation began in earnest after passing class 12th in 2022. I was enrolled in a renowned coaching institute known for its rigorous AIATS test series. Our batch, made up of students from 2020 to 2022, experienced both ups and downs. We struggled to maintain our momentum and focus due to the lack of daily life activities and distractions from watching series and spending time at home.
The coaching year was instrumental in reviving my spirits and revamping my study plan. Regular classes, self-study, and the use of online resources became the core of my routine. With the help of my coaching, I embraced a structured approach to the syllabus and regular assessments to track my progress.
The Mental Health Factor
While the intense preparation was crucial, maintaining mental health was equally important. The pressure to perform well can be overwhelming, leading to stress and anxiety. I found solace in physical activities, hobbies, and mindfulness practices. These helped me stay balanced and motivated throughout the year.
Peer Support and Study Groups
Another critical aspect of the drop year was the support from my peers. Forming study groups with other drop year aspirants provided motivation, shared resources, and assistance with tough concepts. This camaraderie made the journey more manageable and enjoyable.
Mock Tests and Goal Setting
To gauge my performance and adapt my study plan, regular mock tests were indispensable. These tests helped me understand the exam pattern and improve my time management skills. Additionally, setting clear and achievable goals throughout the year kept me focused and motivated.
Personal Journey with JEE
My normal JEE journey began in 2022, with a significant setback in my first attempt. In June 2022, I appeared for the second shift and scored an 80th percentile, which was a disappointing result. Seeing the fading hope in my parents' eyes was one of the lowest moments, but my father's unwavering support gave me the strength to continue.
Determined to improve, I enrolled in the Allen coaching institute in August 2023. Being surrounded by competitors and friends, I rekindled a sense of competition that was essential for my preparation. Our classes ran from 2:20 PM to 8:20 PM, with some days extending until 9 PM, and we spent most of our day at the institute.
Despite my dedication, my initial attempts in January (86th percentile) and April 2023 (86th percentile) were not as successful as I had hoped. Feeling disheartened, I decided to take a more methodical approach, following channels like Nishant Vora for maths and Shakshi Vora on chemistry. Physics, being my strongest subject, was further honed with EDUNITI PYQs and some advanced portions.
Result Day and Future Prospects
The day of the final result for JEE 2024 is fast approaching. With discipline, perseverance, and the support of my peers and mentors, I remain hopeful for a positive outcome. While the exact result remains to be seen, the journey itself has been a valuable lesson in resilience and determination.
