If I Could Relive High School: A Journey of Growth and Lessons Learned
Many of us have had moments in high school that we’d trade for a do-over, but changing the past is often an impossible feat. Reflecting back on my days in high school, there were definitely moments that were challenging, but these experiences ultimately contributed to the person I am today. Would I change anything if I could relive my high school days? No. Even the low points were essential for my growth into a functioning adult. High school is a crucible, but that is the point.
Personal Reflections on High School
As someone who was homeschooled, I didn't have the same experiences as my classmates, but I did have my fair share of struggles to deal with. Despite being a shy guy during the early eighties, there were some girls who showed interest in me. Looking back, I realize that going back for one week and being more assertive in my social skills could have made a significant difference. It’s important to seize opportunities to enhance your social skills, as they are invaluable in both personal and professional settings.
Teaching Experiences in High School
In my college days, I often found myself returning to high school to assist with teaching. There was a period when I returned to high school just before the end of the academic year and got a chance to teach a few classes. This experience was enriching and helped me understand the dedication of teachers and the impact they can have on students' lives. Even for a single day, it was an honor and a privilege to pass on knowledge.
A Classic High School Memory
One of the most memorable experiences from my time in high school took place during lunchtime on a hot spring day. The entire school was gravitating towards the cafeteria for a special treat - beef stroganoff, a dish served only twice a year. When the bell rang signaling the end of fourth period, everyone was practically sprinting towards the cafeteria, eager to feast on the beloved dish.
The beef stroganoff that day was especially delicious, with just the right amount of seasoning. As we began to savor the meal, the students were practically licking their plates clean. Unexpectedly, a student screamed from the doorway of the men's bathroom, leading to a scene of chaos and excitement. The hallways were filled with the sound of excited chatter as everyone rushed to see what was happening.
As the crowd gathered, a system of order began to form. There was a designated door holder, a minister to manage the crowd, and finally, the showman. My turn came, and I approached the middle stall. The smell hit me like a tidal wave, filling my nostrils and causing my eyes to water. To this day, I can smell the stench vividly. However, my first thought was to see if the culprit had finished standing to urinate. My mind raced with scientific knowledge, trying to understand the biological and physical processes at play.
Despite the smell, my craving for beef stroganoff overtook my initial hesitation. As I returned to the dining area, I realized my body was signaling for a bathroom break. The beef stroganoff had indeed left me in need of relief. If I could go back, I would do everything in my power to identify and thank the person responsible for the wonderful smorgasbord of stroganoff.
Conclusion
High school is a transformative period, filled with both challenges and triumphs. Even though certain moments might seem unpleasant or embarrassing in retrospect, they are invaluable stepping stones on the path to personal growth. By reflecting on these experiences, we can learn important lessons that shape us into better individuals. As an adult, I am grateful for the experiences that make me who I am today, and I encourage others to embrace the lessons of their own past.
