How to Prepare for CAT 2017 with a Strategy Tailored for April Starters

I am currently in my last year of graduation, residing in Kanpur, U.P. I have already appeared for CAT 2023 and achieved an overall 84.12th percentile, scoring 82.5 in Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC), 77.6 in Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (LRDI), and 75.84 in Quantitative Ability (QA). Building upon this foundation, I am now gearing up for CAT 2024, aiming to refine and improve my scores in each section.

Sectional Insights for CAT 2017

Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC)

My strategy for VARC in CAT 2023 involved tackling all RC passages. While it may sound unconventional, my reading speed and comprehension were strong, primarily due to extensive reading of editorial sections from newspapers like The Indian Express and Mint. This practice not only enhanced my reading speed but also enriched my GDPI (Group Discussion and Personal Interview) preparations.

This year, I am focusing on VARC more efficiently. I recommend extensive reading, solving at least 2-3 RC sets daily, and maintaining consistent practice to improve comprehension and speed further.

Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (DILR)

My LRDI scores in 2023 were not as strong as desired, indicating the need for a more strategic approach. Focusing on basic topics like circular and linear arrangements, and practicing strategically selected sets, can significantly improve performance. A robust strategy involves initially scanning the sets and prioritizing based on difficulty.

Quantitative Ability (QA)

As QA was the most challenging for me, I am relying on concept videos from platforms like Takshzila and Bodheeprep, followed by practice from Bodheeprep’s free modules. Maintaining a formula book for important formulae and shortcuts is crucial. The QA section, which comprises mostly arithmetic problems, requires focused practice. Classify questions based on their difficulty and prioritize accordingly.

Timeline and Mock Strategy

Building a solid foundational understanding is essential, especially in QA. Starting from June-July, I am focusing on basic concepts. By August, after the syllabus is complete, I am taking mocks to simulate the actual exam experience.

Subscribe to at least two test series: BodheePrep, TIME, and IMS CL for comprehensive coverage. In addition, I will rely on online coaching provided by IQUANTA for daily RC sets, LRDI sets, and assignments.

Mock analysis is crucial for improvement. Review all wrong and unattempted questions for VARC. For LRDI, focus on set selection and review solutions for shortcuts. QA reviews should identify shortcuts and ensure all easy and medium-level questions are attempted.

Guidance and Strategy Tips

Developing a routine and seeking mentorship are key. Do not take mock scores too seriously, except during analysis. Experiment with various strategies during mocks to find what works best. Balance your studies with hobbies for a healthier approach.

Learn to manage your time effectively and avoid getting stuck on difficult questions. Persistence is crucial, as even non-engineers can achieve high scores in CAT.

Best of luck on your CAT 2024 journey. Feel free to reach out for any further queries.
