How GEM Candidates Can Aim for Top Percentiles in CAT: Expert Advice from Rahul Sir

By Rahul Sir, CAT Coach

Introduction

Scoring high in the Common Admission Test (CAT) is crucial for Group Executive Management (GEM) candidates aiming to secure a call from prestigious Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). Rahul Sir, a renowned CAT coach with over a decade of experience, shares valuable insights on how GEM candidates can achieve top percentiles.

Targeting the 99th Percentile

The goal for most GEM candidates should be to aim for a 99.8 percentile with all sections scoring around 97. While there is always a risk of not receiving a call from 1-2 IIMs, a high percentile guarantees calls from a majority of institutions. Each IIM has different intake policies, making a high percentile a near-guarantee.

Controlling the Controllable

The key to success in CAT is to focus on controllable factors such as preparation, strategy, and mindset. Factors such as the economic situation, job market, and personal circumstances are beyond your control and should not interfere with your preparation.

80/20 Rule and Setting Mission 200

Rahul recommends targeting a score of 200 rather than 150. Achieving 5 extra accuracies and hunting for an additional 3 questions can make a significant difference. Make the final 5 minutes of the exam count by optimizing your time usage. Utilizing faster problem-solving techniques can help you leave questions quickly, ensuring you maximize your score.

Intensive Study and Analysis

Achieving a high CAT score requires diligent study and analysis. Rahul suggests studying between mock tests. Analyze your performance after each mock test, identifying areas of improvement. Allocate time to understand your mistakes and reinforce your knowledge on difficult topics. For example, if you struggle with a particular Logical Reasoning (LR) set, research similar sets over the next few days to build confidence and expertise.

Seek Mentorship

Having a mentor can significantly enhance your CAT preparation. Even if you are consistently scoring well, regular mentorship can help manage stress and provide guidance. Find someone experienced who can review your preparation, share insights, and offer motivation. Periodic discussions with mentors can help you stay aligned with your goal and maintain focus.
