Exploring Jogging Routes in and Around Pullman: A Runner’s Guide
Introduction
For runners and nature enthusiasts in Pullman, Washington State University (WSU) and its surrounding areas offer a wealth of scenic routes for jogging. Each route has its unique charm and challenges, from the consistency and safety of the Chipman Trail to the lesser-known landmarks such as the Horse Track and the Water Tower. By leveraging these routes, you can enjoy both low-impact running and intense interval workouts, all while taking in the stunning Palouse landscapes.
Gravel Loop by the Bears
Description
Starting at the famous The Bears at WSU, this route takes you through a hilly terrain, offering a mix of adventure and tranquility. Continue down Airport Way for about 150 feet, then look left to see an open grassy hillside. You can hop over the ditch and immediately start on a gravel path that takes you through a loop. The loop consists of an inside loop that is just less than half a mile and an outside loop that is closer to three-quarters of a mile. This makes it excellent for runners seeking both low-impact workouts and interval training.
The Horse Track
Description
The horse track, located just off Olympia Ave below the observatory, is one of the least visited places on campus. It is perfect for those looking to burn a few extra calories. Despite signs of neglect, the track offers a half-mile circumference, making it half as repetitive as the stadium track. Running at night under the moonlight provides a unique and almost spiritual experience.
Water Tower/Golf Course Hill/Nuke Facility/Observatory
Description
This route involves multiple landmarks, making it less about a perfectly mapped-out route and more about hitting various check points. Begin at the Recreation Center, cross the street, and head towards the trail leading into some trees. Following the trail, you'll climb up the hill using a gravel path. Descend the hill, run through the golf course parking lot, and head towards the 18th hole, passing a green and then the Nuclear Center. For an even more complete experience, arrange a tour of the facility. The final checkpoint involves running back down Roundtop Dr and connecting to Wilson Rd via Hog Ln, ending near the Plant Introduction Station, with its futuristic moon base-like appearance. Finish by exploring the numerous service roads and trails leading to the Veterinary School parking lot.
Note: This route is best explored about a half hour before sunset to catch the stunning views of the campus and the surrounding area.
Moscow Mountain
Description
Moscow Mountain is a hotspot for mountain biking, but it also offers exceptional jogging trails. Start by getting a trail map, and seek advice from the folks at Gravity Sports in Moscow. It is advisable not to run alone due to the varied terrain. Ensure you are well-prepared and equipped for this trail.
Kilmer Rd
Description
Kilmer Rd offers a scenic route that begins at the Grand Avenue Greenway. Follow the railroad tracks under Terre View Rd until the pavement turns up to Grand Ave, where you should turn right onto a dirt trail parallel to the guardrail. Cross a stream and head west on Kilmer Rd, passing by residences on the beautiful gravel road. You can either head back or continue to explore the wheat fields after the first mile, particularly during the summer or fall.
The Grade
Description
The Grade, known as the rowers’ training ground, includes a consistent uphill climb, with the total distance to the top being around 6 miles. This route is excellent for training for longer distances and for those with joint issues, offering low-impact jogging if you only run uphill. It’s important to be prepared for high winds, especially at the top, so check the weather at Lower Granite Dam before heading out. The top of The Grade leads to Wawawai Rd and Wawawai-Pullman Rd, from where you can run down to Clarkston and Lewiston, which is popular among cyclists.
By exploring these routes, you’ll not only enjoy the scenic beauty of the Palouse but also enhance your physical fitness, making your runs more fulfilling and memorable.
