Exploring Art: Early Exposure and Lifelong Journey

Exploring Art: Early Exposure and Lifelong Journey

Art has been a integral part of my life since infancy. My early exposure to art came through my father, a photographer, and my mother, who was not only a musician but also a casual painter. At the tender age of three, my father highlighted the fascinating color striations of an apple I was trying to draw, sparking my interest in visual art.

Early Art Education and Encouragement

Elementary school laid the foundation for my artistic journey, focusing on Impressionist Art, which recognized and nurtured my innate abilities. My junior high and high school education further encouraged and recognized my talents, awarding me grants to pursue my passions. Private art tutoring provided a structured approach to improving my skills, but it was personal exploration that led me to undertake higher art training.

Artistic Versatility and Skillset

While I may not excel in originality, my strength lies in duplicating art and honing my eye/hand coordination and problem-solving abilities. I have explored various mediums, including painting, drawing, writing, metalsmithing, sculpture, and design, and even delved into traditional dance from across the Pan Pacific region during my youth.

Professional Experience and Tutoring

Now, after nearly 70 years of engaging in art and craftwork, I focus primarily on oil painting as my professional practice. Art and craftwork have been central to my life, providing a creative outlet and a means to share my artistic journey with others.

Personal Journey and Continuous Learning

My journey as an artist was significantly influenced by an inspiring teacher between the ages of 14 and 18. This mentor opened my eyes to the endless possibilities within art. Music also played a role in my artistic thinking, connecting me to the world of artists and art communities. Living in London has provided me with access to galleries showcasing both established and emerging artists, enriching my understanding and appreciation of art.

Personal Art Story Continued

Miriam Bordan shares a similar story, having been exposed to art from a young age. Book illustrations were likely her first experiences, and her mother’s painting of a scene from her honeymoon in Mexico City left a lasting impression. School further deepened her interest, with visits to the Cleveland Museum of Art and school art classes. The year after high school, an exchange program in an English boarding school turned her personal exploration of art into a passion project, leading her to become an art history major.

Even in her other endeavors like photography and gardening, Miriam infuses her artistic sensibilities. This passion for art infuses nearly every aspect of her life, whether personal, professional, or shared with others. Her journey is one of continuous learning and engagement, showing that art is not just a hobby but a way of life.
