To be considered for the Perimeter Scholars International (PSI) course at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, candidates must meet certain academic and application requirements. Let's delve into these prerequisites and what to expect post-graduation.

Eligibility Requirements

Academic Background

A strong foundation in physics and mathematics is essential. Typically, a bachelor's degree in physics, mathematics, or a related field is required. This background should demonstrate a solid understanding of fundamental concepts and theories.

Academic Performance

High academic standing is crucial. A focus on advanced coursework in relevant subjects is often expected, indicating a deep and thorough understanding of the subject matter.

Language Proficiency

English proficiency is mandatory as the program is conducted in English. Non-native speakers must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores to demonstrate their language competency.

Application Materials

Application materials include a completed application form, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a statement of purpose. In some cases, a CV may also be required.

Post-Graduation Reality

Realistically, there are no hard expectations post-graduation. However, graduates often move into advanced studies and careers in academia, research institutions, and other industry roles that require strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Some may go on to PhDs, sabbaticals, or directly into industry positions.

In my class, around 80 students pursued PhDs immediately after graduation, while approximately 4 students took sabbaticals and 2 students moved into industry. This suggests a typical distribution across MSc programs.

PSI is a master's course in physics, assuming that students are familiar with physics at the level of the GRE. However, many students clearly excel in their specific areas of undergraduate research before joining PSI.
