Does Some Level of Ego Always Remain Even in Fully Enlightened People?
Many spiritual teachings suggest that the belief in ego and the identification with a 'person' are the root causes of ego. When one realizes that the idea of a 'self' is an illusion, it raises the question of whether the concept of ego can remain in a fully enlightened individual.
The Experience of Enlightenment and the Ego
According to spiritual teachings, when someone achieves a level of enlightenment, they realize that there is no separation between anything in existence. This awareness leads to a profound realization of absolute stillness and a state of nothingness beyond any conceptual understanding. This state of emptiness transcends the idea of emptiness, truly embodying a union of Being where the concept of ego seems to have no physical or mental space.
Given such a state, the question arises: where can the ego hide in the midst of this silence and emptiness? If the ego is just a function of Being, can it be distinguished from Being itself? The answer lies in how one perceives and identifies with the ego.
To speak of the ego, one requires a conceptual framework of what the ego is and a belief that this framework is meaningful. However, when faced with the silence and emptiness of the enlightened state, why would there be a need for any conceptual framework? If there are no thoughts, how can the thought 'Do I have an ego' arise? If it never arises, can it ever be answered?
The idea that there is always an ego is just an idea, as it is empty and devoid of meaning. Similarly, the idea that there is no ego is also just an idea, empty and without substance.
The Persistent Nature of Ego
While enlightenment might suggest the transcendence of the ego, the ego itself, defined by the 'I-ness', 'my-ness', and 'mine-ness', remains present until the very end of one's life. Even fully enlightened beings acknowledge the existence of ego, although it is controlled and silent. The ego, however, continues to exist for as long as life does.
One who is not yet enlightened cannot provide personal experiences, but according to spiritual teachings, ego attachments and aversions are still present, albeit without the power to control a person. Those on the path of enlightenment find delight in life and laugh at their desires and ego, remaining amused rather than controlled by them.
Personal Growth and Enlightenment
As one progresses on their journey towards enlightenment, they become more aware of the capabilities of the ego and learn to use it more effectively. However, this awareness does not always bring about a desirable outcome, as it can also make one more self-indulgent. It is important to search for answers within yourself first as this inner journey is unique to each individual.
In conclusion, while enlightenment brings about a profound transformation and the realization that the 'self' is an illusion, the ego can still persist in some form. The journey towards Enlightenment is a continuous one, and individuals must navigate the challenges and learn to master the ego under enlightened guidance.
