What is the Average Starting Salary for MS in CS Graduates from Stanford University?
As of my last update in August 2023, the average starting salary for graduates with a Master’s in Computer Science (MS in CS) from Stanford University typically ranged between $120,000 and $160,000 per year. However, this figure can vary based on factors such as the specific industry, job role, and individual negotiation skills. I was accepted into all the programs of the universities I applied to, including the Computer Science (CS) programs at Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, and MIT, and the Physics programs at Stanford, Caltech, and UC Berkeley. However, my interest lay in Theoretical Physics, similar to that of Einstein. Since I did not receive a full scholarship from UC Berkeley, I was left with the options of Caltech and Stanford.
Caltech offered a full scholarship, covering all the costs, while Stanford provided an additional return ticket to my home country for each year of the degree. I also learned that Stanford undergrads often earn more than those at Caltech due to the proximity to Silicon Valley. Despite my initial intention to enroll in the Physics program at MIT, which has a high number of Nobel laureates, my father advised me to choose Stanford because of its strong entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Post-Degree Experiences
Upon completing my degree and updating my LinkedIn profile with degree verification, I received numerous job offers from top cities like New York, London, Berlin, Delhi, Bangalore, Los Angeles, and Boston, as well as from tech giants like IBM, Amazon, and Microsoft. However, I decided to pursue my Master’s and PhD first. The least salary I received was $1,900 per week, which equates to approximately $98,000 per year. This was a significant amount for someone from a middle-class family in India, but I chose to continue my graduate studies to prepare for even better opportunities in the research field. I am also planning to pursue a part-time Doctorate of Science while working full-time.
