Introduction to AP Classes for High School Juniors
As a high school junior preparing for the 2020-2021 academic year, I am excited to delve into a rigorous curriculum that challenges my intellect and prepares me for the future. This year, I am enrolled in a mix of AP (Advanced Placement) classes and some self-study options. In this guide, I will provide an overview of my AP course selection, explore the subjects in detail, and share tips on how to succeed in online learning environments.
The Course Selection
For the upcoming school year, I am taking a total of five AP classes, with one being self-studied. My choice of courses reflects a balance between challenging myself academically and ensuring a well-rounded educational experience. Let's explore each of my chosen AP courses in more detail:
European History
European History is the next step in my high school history pathway. This course builds upon my previous experience with AP World History (APWH) and AP U.S. History (APUSH). I am passionate about history, and I have found that the teacher for this class is exceptionally engaging and knowledgeable. Although some students find this course challenging, I believe that the support from the teacher and my previous knowledge will make it a valuable learning experience.
Biology
Biology is a part of the science track, following my Honors Biology course from ninth grade and AP Chemistry this year. After careful consideration, I chose AP Biology before AP Physics due to the additional math required for AP Physics. My confidence in the subject matter and the strength of the teacher (who taught Honors Biology) made this choice easier. I look forward to continuing my science education under her guidance.
Calculus
Currently, I am not sure if I am taking AP Calculus AB or BC, but regardless, I am prepared to challenge myself with this advanced math course. Having previously covered Algebra II, Geometry, and Trigonometry/Functions, I have a solid foundation in mathematics. My calculus teacher, who also taught Geometry, is one of my favorite teachers, and his challenging yet supportive approach has prepared me well for this class. I am enthusiastic about the prospect of advancing my mathematical skills under his guidance.
AP English Language and Composition
For English, I am taking AP English Language and Composition. This class offers an excellent opportunity to improve my writing skills, particularly for college admissions essays. I have taken English courses in ninth and tenth grade and now have the option to either take a standard English class or an AP class to graduate. Many juniors in my school take AP English, and it is generally considered a relatively easy class but with substantial work. My goal is to learn to write more effectively for future academic and professional endeavors.
US Government and Politics
To fill an extra spot in my schedule, I have chosen to take US Government and Politics. While I am not as familiar with the course content, it is known for being easy with no summer work. It serves as a useful option to balance my workload and allow me to explore an area of interest.
Self-Study: Environmental Science
Among the self-study options, I decided to pursue Environmental Science on my own. This aligns with my interest in the environment and climate change, making it a fascinating subject to learn more about. Additionally, the ease of self-study with this course makes it a low-stress yet enriching option for my schedule.
Advisories for Online Learning
As a high school junior, I recognize that online learning requires a certain level of discipline and self-motivation. Here are some tips that have helped me succeed in my AP classes:
Set a consistent study schedule: Regularity is key in online learning. Create a study timetable that accommodates your workload and stick to it.
Stay organized: Keep your study materials, notes, and deadlines organized to avoid confusion and ensure that you don't miss any important information.
Engage with your peers: Join study groups or online forums to discuss course concepts and gain new insights from your classmates.
Take breaks and stay healthy: Online learning can be demanding, so make sure to take breaks, exercise, and maintain a healthy lifestyle to keep your mind sharp.
Conclusion
As I embark on my senior year, I am grateful for the challenging yet rewarding AP coursework that I have chosen. By balancing my academic pursuits with a well-rounded schedule, I am poised to achieve my goals and excel in the coming year. I hope this guide helps other high school juniors navigate the AP classes available to them and find the right balance for their educational journey.
